With just one more game remaining until the official end of the 2023 NFL season, most teams are fully in offseason mode.
That includes the Buffalo Bills, whose fans are now looking toward free agency, and the 2024 NFL Draft.
To prepare all 32 fan bases for the upcoming draft, I published my first two-round mock draft of the cycle, in which the Bills landed two dynamic playmakers on both sides of the ball.
Round 1, Pick 28: Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State
"One of the most polarizing players in this year's WR class is Florida State's Keon Coleman. At one point, he was considered the number two player in this class after Marvin Harrison Jr., but he has since fallen down many people's boards due to him struggling to create separation last season and relying on his ability to make contested catches. His tape at Michigan State prior to transferring to Florida State shows me a player who, when needed, is a solid route runner and can get open when needed, and I think an NFL coaching staff will be able to highlight that part of his game. Give him Josh Allen and watch him flourish."
Keon Coleman has had quite the fall from grace over this past college season. Early on, he looked like the consensus WR 2 in this class and now seems to have fallen to WR 5 or even 6. For me, I think the separation concerns are overblown, and I think he will end up testing better than people realize when the combine comes around. My biggest reason for liking this pick is if you let him work with a QB like Josh Allen, who will give Coleman multiple opportunities to make big plays, and good things will happen.
Round 2, Pick 60: Edgerrin Cooper, LB, Texas A&M
"I was between LB and safety with the Bills second-round pick, but with three of the top safeties already being selected, I like the value in them adding a player like Texas A&M’s Edgerrin Cooper. Cooper lined up all over the defense last year and projects as an NFL starter. I think Sean McDermott and the Bills would be one of the spots in the NFL to allow Cooper to have a creative role in their defense, which would allow him to display his entire skill set."
Some will not be a fan of grabbing an LB here, but Edgerrin Cooper played all over the field at Texas A&M. According to PFF, Cooper played 453 snaps in the box, 82 in the slot, 66 on the defensive line, and even eight at the corner in 2023. I think Cooper offers a lot of upside as a pass rusher at the pro level and likely could be a Swiss army knife for whatever team drafts him. And I think head coach Sean McDermott would deploy his creativity, which would allow him the chance to reach his high potential. So, I urge Bills fans to see the full vision possible for a player like Cooper and not just look at his position.
