It looks like Alabama has their next head coach.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Friday afternoon that Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer is in negotiations with Alabama to replace Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide's head coach.

DeBoer is 25-3 in two seasons as Washington head coach. He's in high in demand as a coach after leading Washington to the national championship game this season. The Huskies lost to Michigan, but it was still an impressive accomplishment considering Washington went 4-8 the year before DeBoer's arrival.

If DeBoer lands at Alabama as expected, he could bring a former Tennessee Vols assistant with him.

Washington tight ends coach Nick Sheridan has worked on DeBoer's staff the last two seasons as the Huskies' tight ends coach. Sheridan was also the Indiana tight ends coach in 2019 when DeBoer was the Hoosiers' offensive coordinator.

From 2014 to 2016, Sheridan was a graduate assistant at Tennessee. But he wasn't just any graduate assistant — he was essentially a de facto quarterbacks coach for the Vols, working closely with Josh Dobbs for three seasons (offensive coordinator Mike DeBord, who hadn't been a quarterbacks coach since 1986, was Tennessee's "official" quarterbacks coach in 2015 and 2016).

It would make sense for DeBoer to bring Sheridan along to Alabama — especially since DeBoer doesn't have any SEC experience. Sheridan would be a familiar face that could provide some insight on life in the SEC.

Of course, DeBoer has to be officially hired by Alabama first. But it sounds like that's the likely outcome at this point.
