The Dallas Cowboys suffered such an embarrassing loss against the Green Bay Packers that it has the future of the franchise in question in more than one way even after three consecutive 12-win seasons.
Nothing is going to stop questions (and potentially big changes) about what's next. Not having earned the second seed, not another 12-win season, not an MVP candidacy from Dak Prescott nor a rewritten record book by CeeDee Lamb. After Sunday's game, everything is worthy of being questioned, starting by head coach Mike McCarthy's job.
Jerry Jones immediately claimed he hadn't thought about the future of the Cowboys head coach, but there's no doubt the clock is ticking for McCarthy while the coaching free agency carousel has names such as Jim Harbaugh, Mike Vrabel, and Bill Belichick available.
When asked about the growing rumors, which have been fueled by multiple NFL insiders suggesting McCarthy's job hinged on how the Cowboys' season came to an end, quarterback Dak Prescott took a strong stance on his head coach.
“In that case, it should be about me as well, I’ve had the season I’ve had because of him," Prescott told reporters postgame without holding back. "This team has had the success we’ve had because of him. I understand it's about winning the Super Bowl. (…) I get it but add me to the list in that case."
Prescott's message is a strong one. He's vouching for his head coach by jumping in front of the bullet. And if we're being totally fair, that's McCarthy's biggest shot at keeping his job: The fact that he's given the Cowboys the best version of Prescott the team has seen since they drafted him in 2016.
But at the end of the day, Dak's thinking isn't the most practical one. Finding an NFL quarterback is just much harder than it is replacing a head coach. Heck, even if the Cowboys decide Prescott isn't the future (which is a much more complicated discussion), finding a signal caller is extremely difficult in a league that either has a franchise QB or is in QB limbo. It wouldn't be as simple as letting both go.
The truth is it isn't a happy meal combo. It's not two-for-one type deal. McCarthy can be out even if Prescott isn't. And right now that seems like the likeliest path moving forward.
