After a search that lasted a couple of weeks, the Cleveland Browns landed on their new offensive coordinator for next season.

Ken Dorsey comes over to the Browns and will work under head coach Kevin Stefanski and rejoin a team he once played for.

After calling plays at his last stop in Buffalo with the Bills, Stefanski has to decide if he wants to give play-calling duties up for the first time as a head coach.

Since taking over in 2020, Stefanski has called the offensive plays for the Browns. We’ve seen some good and some bad, we’ve also seen a lot of outside factors playing into how good the offense is.

Deshaun Watson has played just 12 games in two seasons with the Browns and Cleveland started five different quarterbacks in 2023. Still, the offense made it to the playoffs and the passing game took off late in the year with Joe Flacco. Stefanski very well is picking up his second Coach of the Year award soon because of those efforts.

There is no hiding from it, the seat was a bit warm going into 2023. Ultimately, there was no chance that Stefanski was giving up the play sheet and putting it into the hands of someone else in a huge year for his career. Now that Stefanski has passed that point and his job is fully secure, it should be on the table for him to pass the throne.

Not because he’s done a bad job of it or anything, I believe he is a top 12 offensive mind in the game and one of the best at sequencing. But giving up the hat would allow Stefanski to dive into a CEO role and be more involved within other parts of the team.

Dorsey was one of a few candidates that I could see taking over the role in Cleveland. He has had major success with athletic quarterbacks. Dorsey worked with Cam Newton during his peak time with the Panthers and he’s the main contribution in Josh Allen becoming who he has become.

Whether or not Stefanski gives up the headset is yet to be seen but expect it to be a heavy talking point with big implications for 2024. Even if he does not, Dorsey is going to have his fingerprints all over this offense.
