It seems that as we get further into advanced stats and analytics, people in the media forget what football, and specifically defense is about.

Stopping the opposing QB from being able to throw the ball will always be a defense's number one goal.

And no one does that better than T.J. Watt, yet some believe he isn't worthy of DPOY. Well, thankfully, his NFL counterparts see it differently:

Watt Voted DPOY Anonymously

We frame that initial question as simply "who's your pick for league MVP," but inevitably it's generally an offensive player, if not a quarterback, so we follow by asking for a defensive MVP. This yielded our closest finish yet — the first seven responses went to different players, and because one player wanted to split his vote between two players, it set up a flurry of lead changes late between Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland (who had five pick-sixes in 2023) and Steelers pass-rusher T.J. Watt (who led the NFL with 19 sacks).

Watt ended up winning with six votes, edging out Bland by a half-vote. Browns pass-rusher Myles Garrett took third with 3.5 votes, then Cowboys pass-rusher Micah Parsons with three and Raiders pass-rusher Maxx Crosby and Ravens defensive lineman Justin Madubuike with two each. -Greg Auman Fox Sports

Watt is currently third in odds to win NFL DPOY with just days until NFL honors, a night where the best of the best both on and off the field are recognized for their achievements.

Unfortunately, Vegas tends to be right in these situations, especially when it comes to oddsmaking on things like awards.

But should someone else win the prestigious honor, at least Watt can go to bed knowing that the opinions of his peers place him atop the mountain among NFL defenders.
