According to multiple reports, the Carolina Panthers are hiring Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales to serve as the franchise's new head coach.
Canales just wrapped up his first season as an offensive coordinator, helping guide the Bucs to an NFC South division title and a win against the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the playoffs.
Prior to his time in Tampa, Canales was on the Seattle Seahawks' staff under Pete Carroll from 2010 to 2022, serving in a variety of roles, including quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
Shortly after the news broke, ESPN analyst and former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III took to Twitter/X.com to share his thoughts on the hire.
Griffin, who spent nine seasons in the NFL, thinks Carolina is making a great decision by hiring Canales.
"Dave Canales is a SPECTACULAR hire by the Panthers, specifically for Bryce Young," wrote Griffin. "Canales helped relaunch the careers of Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield in back to back years by building the offense around their strengths in his west coast scheme. Excited to see him work with Bryce."
There's no doubt that Canales has gotten the most out of quarterbacks that the rest of the NFL viewed as damaged goods. That bodes well for Bruce Young's development. While Young isn't anywhere close to being labeled "damaged goods", it's clear that his potential wasn't maximized in Charlotte this past season.
