Xavier Legette is finally showing Panthers fans the one thing they have been waiting to see at training camp

The Carolina Panthers need wide receiver Xavier Legette to take a significant leap in his third NFL season, and the early returns from training camp suggest he might be ready to do exactly that.
Legette has stacked back-to-back consistent days of practice, flashing improved sideline catches and reliable hands that have been missing from his game over the first two years of his career.
Panthers coach Dave Canales praised Legette’s performance over the weekend, and that momentum carried right into Tuesday’s first padded practice of camp.

“Yeah, just a great carryover from the spring,” Panthers head coach Dave Canales said over the weekend. “At this point now, X knows the system. That’s the cool part is, as we bring free agents, as we bring rookies in, they see X, and he knows how to do it all, whether it’s in the base game plan, third downs, nuances in the red zone, all the different things.”
For a player who has frustrated fans with inconsistent production, this is exactly the kind of progress Carolina needs to see.
The most encouraging part of Legette’s recent stretch isn’t one flashy play. It’s the consistency. Sideline catches have been a documented weakness in his game, and that was the exact kind of highlight play he was made on Tuesday, extending for a pass on the sideline and coming down with it with his feet in bounds.
“He knows how to do it, but just matching it with his consistency,” Canales added. “He looks fast, he looks powerful. He’s having a great camp so far, as we get started, and I’m excited to see where he goes from here.”

Going into Year 3, the Panthers clearly still believe Legette has the potential to be much more than what he’s shown on Sundays. But, the Panthers weren’t against adding more competition to the wide receiver room to push him.
The timing of Legette’s surge is worth noting. Carolina added rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell II to push for reps and create competition at the position. However, Brazzell has been sidelined with knee soreness over the last two practice sessions, which opened up additional opportunities for Legette to turn heads on the practice field.
That’s not to diminish what Legette has done. He still had to go out and make the plays, and he has been. But the reality is that opportunity matters in training camp, and Legette is capitalizing on every snap he’s getting right now.
The Panthers brought Brazzell in for a reason. If Legette continues stacking days like these, he can make it difficult for the coaching staff to take reps away from him once the rookie returns. His development is one of the bigger storylines to watch throughout the rest of camp. Carolina’s offense needs playmakers to step up, and a third-year receiver finally putting it all together would be a massive boost for this entire group.
