The waiting is over for Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning.

Late last week, Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers announced that he's returning to Texas for the 2024 season.

Ewers led Texas to an appearance in the College Football Playoff this past season (the Longhorns lost to Washington in the semifinals).

That means that Manning will serve as a backup quarterback for the second straight season at Texas. The former five-star recruit could choose to enter the NCAA transfer portal in April when the next window opens, but that's not expected to be an option that Manning seriously considers.

Earlier this offseason, Maalik Murphy transferred from Texas to Duke. In 2023, Murphy served as the primary backup to Ewers. Murphy's transfer to Duke means that Manning, the nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, will be the primary backup in Austin next fall.

If Ewers falters or suffers an injury in 2024, Manning could take over as the Longhorns' starter. But otherwise, it looks like he'll have to wait until 2025 to serve in a starting role.

And if Manning is as advertised when he finally gets his chance to start, it could mean that he goes pro after the 2025 season. That would mean that the college football world would only get to see one season of Arch starting at the collegiate level.
