The Kansas City Chiefs are adding to their defense for the next leg of the postseason.
According to uSTADIUM on X (formerly Twitter), the Chiefs are set to sign former New York Jets S Trey Dean III. When the Jets' season ended following Week 18, Dean opted to not sign a reserve/future contract with New York, who reportedly wanted him back for 2024. That decision made him an unrestricted free agent upon the expiration of his practice squad contract, at which time he was free to sign with other NFL teams.
Dean was coveted by several playoff teams in free agency according to the initial report from uSTADIUM. The rookie viewed the Chiefs as the best fit.
Dean, 23, went undrafted following the 2023 NFL draft. He played collegiate football at the University of Florida, where his best season came in 2021. He recorded 88 tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, an interception, and eight passes defended. The 6-foot-2 and 200-pound defensive back was a standout at the East-West Shrine Game, earning praise for his performance in the practice week and the game. He was named the defensive MVP of the game, recording a red zone interception.
After going undrafted, Dean signed on with New York. He didn't make it through 53-man roster cuts, but was promptly re-signed to the practice squad where he spent the entire 2023 NFL season. He was not elevated to the Jets' 53-man roster during the 17-game season.
It's not yet clear whether this is a reserve/future contract, a deal that would sign Dean to the 53-man roster, or a deal that would see him start on the Chiefs' practice squad. This transaction was not made official on the NFL personnel notice for Monday, Jan. 15, but Dean did react to an aggregator's post about his signing on social media.

Expect a transaction to happen when Kansas City begins the practice week ahead of the divisional round of the playoffs.
