Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski gave an indication that Browns running back Nick Chubb, who underwent surgery after a leg injury in Week 2, is progressing exactly how he should heading into the offseason.
"He’s doing great, he’s progressing," Stefanski said to reporters Sunday. "He’s doing everything he’s supposed to do, if not more so. We’ll see how it goes.”
Chubb has long been the heartbeat of the Browns. He was drafted by Cleveland in 2018. Since then, all the star runner has done is rack up 1,000-yard seasons.
Hearing that he is progressing as expected is good news for the Browns as the franchise moves towards retooling a roster that made the playoffs with Joe Flacco as the starting quarterback.
Having a healthy Chubb would make that process incredibly easier. But his return ahead of the 2024 season isn't a guarantee.
The timeline for his return is still unknown, but as Stefanski indicates, he is exactly where he is supposed to be.
Chubb's initial injury came in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night football.
After Chubb went down, Cleveland moved to a running back by committee model, which was enough to win double-digit games and get to the playoffs.
In the 2024 season, Chubb is expected to eat up nearly $16 million against the cap. If the Browns want to compete, they will need the best version of their star running back sooner rather than later.
