The San Francisco 49ers will have the Offensive Player of the Year frontrunner for their divisional round playoff game with the Green Bay Packers.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed in a press conference that do-it-all running back Christian McCaffrey would practice in full on Tuesday.
McCaffrey suffered a calf injury in the Week 17 win over the Washington Commanders that sealed the number one seed in the NFC for the 49ers.
He was subsequently held out of the regular-season finale with the Los Angeles Rams, though he indicated he would have played had the 49ers needed the game for seeding purposes. McCaffrey ended the regular season with a league-high 2,023 scrimmage yards and 21 touchdowns. He was named a unanimous first-team All-Pro.
Now he is ready to make his return for the most important game of the 49ers' season so far, with McCaffrey sure to be a focal point with his ability to have a huge impact on both the running game and the passing attack against a Packers linebacker group likely to be extremely vulnerable to what the former Carolina Panther can do as a receiver out of the backfield and out in the formation.
Asked about how McCaffrey is feeling going into his second playoff campaign with the 49ers, Shanahan replied: "I think he's geared up and ready to go, same way he was last year.
"Probably the same way he was in his playoff game when he was five years old, too, or scrimmage that week. Christian's always the same. He's always waiting for that moment, and he's been waiting for this moment for a while."
The 49ers have been waiting for their sixth Super Bowl title for a long time. Now they are in an excellent position to end that wait as the overwhelming favorite to represent the NFC in Super Bowl 58. A healthy McCaffrey only improves the odds of them taking the next step towards that goal by ending Green Bay's impressive run.
