For so much of the San Francisco 49ers' Divisional Round matchup with the Green Bay Packers, Brock Purdy was off target.
He missed high and he missed low and, shorn of one of his premier weapons in Deebo Samuel, who left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return, Purdy looked devoid of answers.
But when he needed them the most, he found them, and led the 49ers on a fourth-quarter comeback a long time in the making. San Francisco had previously been 0-30 when trailing by seven going into the fourth quarter, including the postseason, under Kyle Shanahan, but Purdy's composure under extreme pressure finally ended a winless record in such circumstances that has been a defining narrative of his head coach's tenure.
With the Niners trailing 21-17 with just over six minutes left, Purdy produced accuracy that had evaded him for most of a performance that could have seen him throw several interceptions, as he did in his last primetime meeting with the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day.
On the final drive, Purdy was six of seven for 47 yards, his lone incompletion a drop by George Kittle on a play that would have resulted in a first down, the highlights a pinpoint throw to Brandon Aiyuk on a slant on third down to move the sticks and a rhythmic 17-yard completion to Chris Conley on a corner route.
Four plays later, a nine-yard scramble from Purdy set up San Francisco at the Green Bay six-yard line and Christian McCaffrey powered through a huge hole and give the Niners a lead they successfully protected as Dre Greenlaw picked off Jordan Love for the second time to ice the game.
Speaking in his press conference, Shanahan said of the long-awaited comeback:"I'm just so proud of guys that when things weren't perfect with everything on the line, they were still able to get it done."
Nothing was perfect from the 49ers, not least Purdy. However, under the most pressure of his still young career, his final drive was flawless. If the Niners do go on to claim Super Bowl glory, it is a drive that will live on in franchise legend. For now, the previous imperfections will fuel his dissenters, but two more wins will ensure they will rapidly be forgotten.
