Senior Bowl standout cornerback Quinyon Mitchell would make for a no-brainer Tennessee Titans draft pick

MOBILE, AL — The Tennessee Titans likely won’t be in the market for a cornerback with the 7th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but given their need for help in the secondary, drafting a cornerback in round two would make a lot of sense.

Tennessee’s second round pick is the 39th overall selection in the draft, and I’d love to see them use it on Toledo Rockets cornerback Quinyon Mitchell if he’s still on the board.

Mitchell stood out to me as a big winner during Day 1 of practices at the 2024 Senior Bowl, and is a fast riser that has everything the Titans covet.

When wide receivers and defensive backs kicked off the first practice of Tuesday morning with 1-on-1 drills, Mitchell locked up his opponents and broke up the pass on each of his first three reps.

Later on during the team period of practice, Mitchell had two more pass breakups that had the defensive sideline fired up.

When it comes to Mitchell, I see a player that can excel in man coverage in the NFL. He's patient at the line of scrimmage, his hips are fluid, and he has enough speed to run with wide receivers down the field. I don’t foresee him getting beat deep very often at the next level. Mitchell is sticky in coverage and has a knack for being around the football.

That ballhawking ability showed up during the 2022 season when Mitchell hauled in five interceptions for the Toledo Rockets defense.

After his standout practice performance, Mitchell told me he was looking to be “dominant” all week and prove to teams that he can play anywhere. He models his game off of five-time Pro Bowler Darius Slay and admires his physicality, length, and patience.

Titans Need CBs

Both Kristian Fulton and Sean Murphy-Bunting are unrestricted free agents this offseason. That leaves Roger McCreary as the only starting cornerback on the Titans' active roster heading into the offseason and a big need for an addition.

Prioritizing an offensive tackle or wide receiver in the first round makes a ton of sense for Tennessee, but if Mitchell were to somehow fall to the Titans in Round 2, Ran Carthon should be sprinting to call the pick in.

Mitchell would give the Titans a reliable and physical cover corner that can match up with bigger wide outs. That's something they have lacked over the last couple seasons.

Mitchell is ranked the 27th best draft prospect on the consensus big board and the CB5 of the draft class.

There’s always a chance that he is playing his way into the first round and the Titans never get a shot at him. But come draft day, I’ll have Mitchell’s name circled on my Titans wish list.
