The Kansas City Chiefs front office has officially lost some firepower to the NFC.

We reported over a week ago that the Chiefs could lose their salary-cap expert, VP of Football Ops Brandt Tilis to the Carolina Panthers in an undetermined front office role. This announcement is merely a formality as it was reported over the weekend that this was essentially a done deal. Tilis had already cleaned out his office in Kansas City.

On Wednesday, the Panthers announced that they had officially hired Tilis as their Executive VP of Football Operations.

It's only a slight promotion in title for Tilis, but expect that it took some financing to pry him away from the dynasty brewing in Kansas City. Panthers owner David Tepper sought to pair Tilis with new HC Dave Canales and new GM Dan Morgan, together forming a hydra of football coaching, personnel, and salary cap/contract management experience.

Tilis exits Kansas City after 14 seasons. He first joined the team as a salary cap and contract analyst back in 2010, but he slowly worked his way up the food chain. In 2014, he became the team's Director of Salary Cap and Football Operations Analytics. Under Brett Veach, he received a promotion to Director of Football Administration in 2017, before eventually being promoted to VP of Football Ops in 2021.

Kansas City now has a big hole to fill in the front office. Expect VP of Football Ops and Team Counsel Chris Shea to take a bigger role in contract negotiations and the salary cap in the interim.
