Here at A to Z Sports, we held a way too early 2024 NFL mock draft.

And with the seventh pick, the Green Bay Packers select…

WR Keon Coleman, from Florida State.

"If the Packers don't have the capital to get a top quarterback prospect, they must provide Jordan Love with the best opportunity for success. With the two best offensive tackles off the board, Green Bay hopes that David Bakhtiari comes back and then takes a potentially great wide receiver. Recently transferred from Michigan State to Florida State, Coleman is a big-bodied, athletic player who fits the profile of what the Packers typically seek — even though getting a receiver so early would be an outlier for the franchise."

The first thought is: here we go again. And that's fair, since people have been mocking wide receivers for the Packers for years, and they haven't selected a non-quarterback skill position offensive player in the first round since they took wide receiver Javon Walker in 2002.

And that's fair to a point, but the Packers know they have to invest more in the offense to have a full evaluation of Jordan Love. If they are not in range to select Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, nor to get a top offensive tackle, it's defense or offensive weapon.

They might very well take a defender there, but the Packers defense has more than enough talent already. Maybe a cornerback makes sense, but wide receiver is a more impactful position.

Coleman has the physical profile that Packers GM Brian Gutekunst loves, and he also has the production: he's had 38 receptions for 538 yards and nine touchdowns over eight games this season, his first at Florida State after transferring from Michigan State.

The Packers ideally need a true WR1, which would allow Christian Watson to be a Z receiver. Romeo Doubs would become a possession, rotational WR4, with Jayden Reed in the slot. Dontayvion Wicks is a developmental project.

Not getting a tackle early is a problem, but the Packers still have hope that David Bakhtiari will be back. Moreover, they can re-sign Yosh Nijman, while Zach Tom and Rasheed Walker are under contract through 2025.
