Christian McCaffrey missed out on a piece of NFL history on Sunday as he went without a touchdown for the first time in 18 games, but the San Francisco 49ers' star took that disappointment in the right spirit.
McCaffrey was looking to claim the outright record for the most successive games (regular season and postseason) with a touchdown having tied Lenny Moore by scoring for the 17th straight game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8.
San Francisco dominated all facets as the 49ers ended their three-game losing streak with a 34-3 rout of the Jaguars. McCaffrey was key to them doing so, racking up 142 scrimmage yards, but he could not find the endzone to extend his remarkable streak.
It was not for lack of trying. On the 49ers' penultimate drive with the game long since decided, they got down to the Jaguars' 10-yard line and designed four successive plays for McCaffrey, only for Jacksonville to deny him an incredible achievement, with backup quarterback Sam Darnold's fourth-down throw knocked away from his grasp.
McCaffrey, though, was able to laugh about the missed opportunity in a win that moves the 49ers to 6-3.
"Yeah, I suck. Everyone else on the team scored except for me," McCaffrey joked.
On the 49ers force-feeding him the ball late on, McCaffrey added: "That means a lot to me for them to keep me in at the end of the game there and try to get me that record, but hey, I'll take a huge win."
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw touchdown passes to Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle and fullback Kyle Juszczyk, while Deebo Samuel scored on an end around.
Though Purdy was disappointed not to help McCaffrey get in on the act and make history, he is confident the 49ers' high-powered offense could help him have another crack at the record.
"Yeah, at the end, man, it's like, we all wanted it for him. Every guy on this team wanted it for Christian, and then obviously I think Christian wants it more than anybody," said Purdy.
"He's a humble guy, wants to win. He puts the team first. In that moment, everybody wanted it for Christian.
"It hurts, but at the same time, he's got a long career ahead of him, and I told him we'll be able to do it again."
Brock Purdy benefits from the worst decision he’s made as a 49er
It was a massively risky throw.
