After every Green Bay Packers game, we will talk about three points that defined the matchup.
The Green Bay Packers beat the Los Angeles Chargers 23-20 at Lambeau Field on Sunday, improving to 4-6 in the 2023 season. It was the most prolific game in Jordan Love’s career so far, and Jayden Reed showed once again how impactful he can be — and that he can be a real building block for this young offense.
Jayden Reed is the man
The rookie second-round wide receiver is easily the best offensive playmaker the Packers have. He’s electric, efficient, and versatile. Against the Chargers, he was impactful both as a runner and as a receiver, finishing with 92 scrimmage yards and a rushing touchdown.
Sometimes, Jordan Love can’t connect with Christian Watson, and Romeo Doubs isn’t great at creating separation. But Jayden Reed is everything, and his ability to generate explosive plays is off the charts.
He’s already the wide receiver one, and it’s hard to blame the Packers for using him this way. Even though Dontayvion Wicks finished the game with more receiving yards, Reed was by far the best weapon on the team.
Jordan Love's development
The most important aspect of the Packers season is how Jordan Love will play and how he will develop. On Sunday, the quarterback took a big step forward. It was his first 300-yard game in the NFL, and the first one by a Packers quarterback since 2021.
He was efficient passing the football, distributing the ball for several different players — Jayden Reed was obviously important, but Dontayvion Wicks was a big-time play machine, Romeo Doubs had a lot of volume, and rookie tight ends Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft combined for six catches.
Love had had his best game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He did it again against the Chargers, even though he had two fumbles — and was lucky because both got recovered by the Packers.
Obviously Justin Herbert suffered with his targets’ drops, but Jordan Love outplayed him, and that’s absolutely a promising result.
Defensive luck
Donald Parham, Keenan Allen, Allen again. Bad drops by the Los Angeles Chargers weapons are a big reason why the Packers allowed only 20 points. But that's not a defensive merit, as the receivers were wide open most of the time. And this is one of the lucky factors which don't tend to be sustainable.
When the Chargers were able to catch the football, they could drive the field with relative ease and efficiency. But then they fumbled near the end zone. In the final drive, there was a botched snap, and then another drop, this time around from Quentin Johnston. It was hard to watch — but it was great for Joe Barry’s bend-don’t-break philosophy.
In a game against a powerful offense like the Chargers, though, there’s a merit: the strategy of allowing big drives limited the number of possessions, and that limited the scoring, allowing the offense to operate without as much pressure.
