The Los Angeles Chargers are somehow 4-6. With a very talented and proven roster, they are underwhelming in every sense of the word. Head coach Brandon Staley is receiving deserved heat, and the question remains.

Should the Chargers fire Staley?

Well, there's simply a clear answer to this question at this point. With Justin Herbert playing like a top 7-8 quarterback in the NFL this season and a defense full of impressive athletes, there is no excuse to hold the record that L.A. does after eleven weeks of play.

The answer is yes.

The question has been asked since the conclusion of a disappointing campaign last season. That's a major sign that the time is now to move on from him.

Ultimately, Staley got the benefit of the doubt and kept his position. That leash should be gone.

The defense has widely been the problem for the Chargers this season. That's Staley's unit. Do not forget that he's a defensive-minded HC after being hired away from the Los Angeles Rams. He was their defensive coordinator before joining the Chargers staff as the lead man.

You would not be able to tell based on the statistics for the Chargers this year. Take a look at their ranks among the rest of the NFL on defense.

  • Passing defense (yards per game): 32nd (291.6)
  • Total defense (yards per game): 32nd (418.3
  • Points: 23rd (23.8)

The secondary has been among the league's worst. The running defense has been better than last season, but that's not high praise by any means. They've still had games where they got gashed on the ground.

Staley consistently discusses 'execution' after losses where the defense struggles. After so  many performances where players don't execute how they should, the blame must fall on the coaching staff, too. They clearly are not putting the positions in the best situations to succeed.

Chargers HC Brandon Staley has a melt down after loss to Packers

The Los Angeles Chargers continue to struggle to find wins. Same story, different week for head coach Brandon Staley and his unit on defense. Now, the Chargers are 4-6 after a 23-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Staley went on a strong rant in his press conference after the game against Green Bay.   […]

Untimely penalties have also been a storyline for the Chargers this season. On a weekly basis, Los Angeles takes at least one penalty on defense in a third-and-long situation. That's unacceptable.

Could players be playing better? There's no doubt that's true, too.

That being said, it is clear that there is a disconnect between the coaching and the on-field performances. Staley isn't willing to give over play-calling duties, either. He's made it clear that he wants to hold that role, going off on reporters again after the team's loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The playoffs look like a distant hope for a team that had AFC Championship aspirations entering the season.

Staley's time as the Chargers head coach needs to come to a close. It is the best outcome right now for both sides to avoid further struggles. Los Angeles is wasting an impressive season from their blossoming QB and the offense.
