Defense was not a hot topic for the Denver Broncos at the start of the season, as they had a game where they allowed the Miami Dolphins to score 70 points. They got off to a terrible start, putting up bad numbers.
However, things have changed for the better in 2023. The defense has been making plays and, honestly, has been a huge reason why the team is currently on the win streak, playing some of their best football.
The defense seems to be forcing turnovers. This gives the offense more possessions to work with, which is always a recipe for success. One player in particular, Ja'Quan McMillian, is doing something special when it comes to forcing turnovers.
Let's start with the vital information, though. McMillian is a young guy who has seemingly turned the nickel position into one we no longer have to worry about. It was somewhat of a need, and now he has the position on lock.
McMillian is the first Broncos defender since Von Miller in 2015 to have back-to-back games with fumble recoveries.
That may not seem like a huge deal, but it's night and day when you look at what the defense did at the beginning of the year vs. what they are doing now. McMillian had one against the Buffalo Bills, where the Broncos forced four total turnovers.
Against the Minnesota Vikings, McMillian was the one who punched the ball out on the Viking's first drive of the game when quarterback Josh Dobbs ran the ball.
In this league, you have to create turnovers and win the turnover battle. The Broncos have players on both sides of the ball who can do that. McMillian is just one of the guys that has been doing it at a high level as of late.
