The Athletic recently did a poll where they spoke with 85 players around the NFL and they asked them all kinds of questions and tabulated their answers. The Detroit Lions were all over this thing. They were huge in two different categories that says a lot about the future though.

The first one being where they asked players which coach they'd want to play for if they weren't on their current team. The favorite was Steelers' head Coach Mike Tomlin, but not far behind was Lions' head coach Dan Campbell. He got 8.3 percent of the vote. Only Mike McDaniel and Andy Reid were ahead of him.

That says a ton about what the Lions have in a coach. There's 32 of them in the NFL right now and a lot of players want to play for the one in Detroit. Dan Campbell and the Lions have proved that their culture is one that is good and successful. Players want to play for teams that have that kind of situation.

Another one to note is that they asked those 85 players who the best player in the NFL is and Lions quarterback Jared Goff received votes. This wasn't who is the best quarterback, it was who is the best player and 2.4% of those players chose Goff. Mahomes clearly won this poll going away, but the fact that Goff is on here is huge.

My biggest takeaway from this whole thing is that the Lions are about to have a big free agency in March and Detroit is now a destination. Here's why I think that:

Players are looking for multiple things when they are considering where they want to play next. A solid coach, a good culture, a good quarterback and team that wins is all very high on the checklist. The Lions have all of that and players around the league are taking note of that.

The Lions will have two big contract to worry about this offseason with Jared Goff and Jonah Jackson, but they'll still have money to spend for sure. Right now the Lions are slated to have the fifth most cap space in the NFL this coming offseason.

You have to believe that after the Lions lockdown Goff and more than likely do the same with Jackson, they'll be looking to build a championship level team with the rest of the cash.

Some free agents to keep an eye on this offseason are DT Chris Jones, LB Danielle Hunter, CB Kendall Fuller, LB Devin White, LB Josh Allen and Edge Brian Burns.

They'll also probably be looking to keep Graham Glasgow and C.J. Gardner-Johnson too.

Speaking of Gardner-Johnson, he was voted the leagues biggest trash talker in a landslide victory. A win that shocks absolutely nobody.

Lions Playoff picture after Eagles win on Monday

What a week it was for the Detroit Lions. They got a big comeback win early on Sunday with a 31-26 win over the Bears and then the Broncos helped them out with a win over the Vikings on Sunday Night. Could the Chiefs help them out with a win over the Eagles on Monday […]
