With OC Matt Canada now out of town, and Pittsburgh still alive and well in the playoff race, Pittsburgh decided to strike.
Here is where they currently sit, and while it was later than many wanted, the move to relieve Canada may have come with time to spare:

Steelers Remaining Schedule

The Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts are hot on the heels of the Steelers in the race for the seventh and final wildcard spot. Houston has the same record but they are the sixth seed since they have the head-to-head victory over the Steelers.
Luckily for Pittsburgh, they have two Jake Brwoning-led Bengals games ahead, a matchup with the Colts to give them the upper leg, and a pair of contests against the Cardinals and Patriots that they should have won before the team fired Matt Canada.
The Steelers will likely have a little more wind behind their sails, which hurts to say given the man that Canada was lauded as, and the fact that everyone is to blame for the offense's struggles. But teams tend to rally after in-season changes, with Pittsburgh aiming to copy the Buffalo Bills' recent success after firing their own OC.
Being totally objective, following Canada's departure, and given the talent on both sides of the ball, I could see the momentum of the in-season change carrying Pittsburgh to five consecutive victories given their upcoming schedule.
That would not only solidify the Steelers playoff hopes but potentially garner an even higher wildcard spot.
So Pittsburgh desperately needed a spark as they head into a group of must-win games. And with the trade deadline far gone, along with not many names on the free agent streets, Pittsburgh decided to make changes from the inside out. We'll see how it works out.
