All the noise is that the San Francisco 49ers will be buyers at the trade deadline, but their urgency to do business won't be affected by an alarming losing streak that continued on Sunday with a home loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
At least Kyle Shanahan says it won't.
The 49ers dropped to 5-3 on Sunday as a pair of interceptions from Brock Purdy and another hugely disappointing defensive performance saw them go down 31-17 to the Bengals.
San Francisco had looked like a favorite for the one seed after a 42-10 drubbing of the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5. Now the Niners are sitting in second in the NFC West behind the Seattle Seahawks (5-2), with their slide naturally leading to questions about potential business at the deadline.
The Niners have already made one trade this season, acquiring Randy Gregory from the Denver Broncos. However, his impact has been limited and The Athletic's Diana Russini recently reported the 49ers have been working the phones, with edge rusher and cornerback thought to be the focus of those conversations.
Steve Wilks' defense has given up 852 passing yards across the last two defeats to the Minnesota Vikings and the Bengals, but Shanahan insists those porous performances won't change the trade deadline approach.
"None of this changes anything with the trade deadline, how we played today or how we played these last three weeks," said Shanahan.
"I do believe we have the answers in our building. I believe we have good players. I believe we have good coaches. It's up to me to get them to do better.
"I thought we started out pretty good but there's some things that we haven't been able to hide here in these last few weeks. That's why we've got to continue to push them in every aspect because some people do go on those losing streaks and they don't have those answers and you're just living in hope.
"I truly believe we do have the answers. I believe we've got them with our team, I believe we've got them with our staff. We've got to sit here and wait about 14 days to deal with this feeling that we have, which nobody wants but, I think we need to. I think our guys need to be pissed off a little bit, I think we need to come back with a little better focus because it hasn't been enough and we haven't been getting it done."
It is easy to understand Shanahan's faith in the players he has on his roster, which on paper looked like the best in football going into the season and looked every inch the premier group in the NFL when the 49ers improved to 5-0.
But the talent on the team is why it's hard to take his words at face value. The 49ers believe they have a roster that is ready to take them to the Super Bowl this season. Right now, such an ambition could hardly look further away, with this year of a window that won't last forever seemingly in danger of going to waste.
The Niners' hopes of contending to play in Las Vegas in February would hugely benefit from an infusion of additional quality, particularly to a pass defense that has been picked apart all too easily in the last two weeks, and the fall back to the pack will surely only have hastened the desire to find a player who can be an additional problem solver on top of the answers Shanahan believes they already possess.

It was a huge mental error.
