Tennessee's passing game has been a bit disjointed at times this year. That's not completely surprising, given the Vols lost offensive stars Hendon Hooker, Jalin Hyatt, Cedric Tillman, and Princeton Fant.
However, for one moment at least, the Vols managed to turn back the clock to 2022 with a splash play on Saturday against UConn.
Leading 7-3 in the second quarter from the UT 40-yard line, Milton dropped back to pass. After a few seconds he let it fly. The ball came down into the waiting arms of WR Ramel Keyton. There wasn't another soul on the television screen. Keyton hauled it in, looked around, and basically walked into the end zone.
The play design was beautiful, as Squirrel White caused a big coverage bust that led to the score. White drew the defender on that side of the field towards him and caused him to stop, while Keyton blew right past him.
It was absolutely a throwback to 2022, in which Hyatt, Tillman, and Keyton flew past defenders and racked up chunk catch after chunk catch throughout the season. Those moments have been very few and far between this season, as Tennessee's offense struggled to get untracked through the first six games of the season.
Now, things appear to be improving for Milton and the Vols passing game. And while it's not 2022 and the stakes aren't quite the same, it's still the perfect time for the Vols' passing attack to be getting in better shape with Missouri and Georgia looming the next two weeks.
