The San Francisco 49ers had no real reason to be watching Monday's primetime thriller between the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos particularly closely.
However, they should have at least taken note of the wild ending that saw the Broncos stun the Bills after getting a do-over on a game-winning field goal.
With no timeouts remaining the Broncos knelt on third down with 24 seconds remaining, running the field goal team on for Will Lutz to attempt a 41-yarder. Lutz appeared to rush the kick and subsequently pushed it wide right.
But he was given a reprieve as the Bills had 12 men on defense, and Lutz made no mistake after the flag with a decisive 36-yard attempt.
No harm no foul for the Broncos, then, but a valuable lesson to the rest of the league, perhaps, about the risks of rushing the field goal team on and speeding up the kicker's process.
That risk is arguably heightened when you have a rookie kicker. San Francisco drafted Jake Moody in the third round, and he has already missed three field goals this year, including a potential game-winner against the Cleveland Browns.
Moody is three for three over his last two games, but the Niners, if they are in a situation where they need to rely on him to make a pressure kick, should always try to ensure they have a timeout in their back pocket and can therefore give him adequate time to prepare.
