Jason Verrett isn't giving up on his NFL career, and the San Francisco 49ers clearly still have some interest in seeing if he can revive it with them.

Verrett, per Field Yates of ESPN, worked out with the 49ers after he was released from the Houston Texans practice squad on Wednesday.

The 2015 first-round pick has seen an extremely promising career derailed by a series of devastating injuries.

Verrett enjoyed an excellent season with the 49ers in 2020. His 13 games played were the most since his Pro Bowl year with the Chargers in 2015 and saw him finish 17th among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps in passer rating allowed (76.3). He was 15th by Pro Football Focus coverage grade and ended the year with seven pass breakups and two interceptions.

He began 2021 as a starter, but suffered a torn ACL late in the season opener. He re-signed with the Niners for 2022, only to sustain a torn Achilles before playing a game following his activation from the PUP list.

The 49ers worked out Verrett shortly before he signed with the Texans' practice squad and have an opening on their practice squad after Shemar Jean-Charles was promoted to the active roster.

San Francisco has designated corners Samuel Womack III and Darrell Luter Jr. to return from injured reserve and PUP respectively, though it remains to be seen if either will be activated to the 53-man roster before their 21-day practice window ends.

Though Ambry Thomas impressed in last week's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars after replacing Isaiah Oliver in the lineup, the 49ers have lack of depth at corner beyond that pair and starters Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir.

Verrett may represent a gamble from an injury perspective, but signing him to the practice squad would at least give the Niners a veteran with a history of producing impressive play at the position for San Francisco.

If nothing else, Verrett deserves the chance to be on a squad expected to go deep into the playoffs, and it would be a feel-good story if the 49ers decide to bring him back.
