A very long week of waiting and preparation is now at an end for the Cincinnati Bengals. Deciding what to do at the quarterback position for tonight's must-win game against the Los Angeles Rams is upon them.
Joe Burrow is a game-time decision, and according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, his pregame workout to help determine if he'll play or not will be conducted this morning.
If said workout goes well, Burrow's case to play becomes stronger and he might just end up starting through the pain. It's a decision the Bengals have been split on for most of the week.
The best case scenario is Burrow playing and making it through the game, ideally leading the Bengals to victory, but contingencies are surely in place more than they have been during the first two weeks of the season.
Jake Browning is QB2 and the only other quarterback on the active roster. He will either start if Burrow cannot go, or he'll come into the game if Burrow ends up having to come out.
If they decide that Browning will start and Burrow cannot play, they will almost be forced to elevate one of their two practice squad quarterbacks to backup Browning for the night. They recently added Reid Sinnett and AJ McCarron to the practice squad after Will Grier left for a roster spot on the New England Patriots.
McCarron may be older and a former draft pick of the Bengals nine years ago, but he's been away from the team and the NFL for much longer than Sinnett. The Bengals have seen Sinnett practice with the team during training camp, so he at least is more familiar with the playbook. Sinnett is the best option to be Browning's QB2 at the moment.
There's also a scenario where Sinnett gets elevated and Burrow plays anyways. The Bengals wouldn't have to sacrifice an activation spot, and having that added insurance would be wise.
We'll get an update on Burrow after his workout concludes.
