Rachaad White being a little disappointing was not on our Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bingo card before the start of the season, but it is hard to argue that this isn't true after three games.
White, and by extension the Buccaneer run game, have been very poor in 2023.
The bad news for the Bucs is that there is not an obvious way out of this problem.
The Buccaneers tied their ship to Rachaad White a short time ago. Leonard Fournette was struggling last year, White was flashing from time to time, and no one else on the roster at the position looked good.
The Bucs smartly cut bait with Fournette and then made the obvious choice to make their third-round pick running back their new starter after a decent end to last season.
Sadly, the commitment to White has put the Bucs in a position where they have the worst rushing attack in the NFL and no way to fix it.
Don't let the total numbers fool you (because the Bucs are silly and still want to establish the run), the 2.8 yards per carry (tied for last in the NFL) tells you everything you need to know about this rushing attack.
The Buccaneers have been terrible at running the ball for a while now, and this year it looks like the scheme and the players are working in tandem to ensure this attack doesn't get any better soon.
Scheme can change. Players are less likely to do so. In truth, what can the Bucs actually do? Bench White? For who?
Rachaad White hasn't been the only disappointing rusher for the Bucs. Sean Tucker hasn't looked as good as his preseason seemed to indicate and Ke'Shawn Vaughn has already proven that he doesn't have the juice in the NFL. Neither fixes this issue for Tampa.
The Buccaneers have essentially dug their own graves and thrown away any means of salvation.
We are in for a long season if the Bucs continue to fail at running the ball and stay leaning into the concept as a means of an identity.
Buccaneers struggle in tough Week 3 loss
It sure wasn’t pretty.
