The New Orleans Saints are once again looking at a potential backup quarterback situation. This time, it is with Jameis Winston.
Starting QB Derek Carr left their Week 3 game against the Green Bay Packers with an AC Joint sprain. Now, his status for Week 4 and beyond is in question.
The Saints' roster and coaching staff say that they believe in Winston to help them win games, but the coaches need to prove that now.
In the past, it has been no secret that play-calling has been very conservative with Winston at QB. They've tried to minimize mistakes from him.
With his weapons this season, the staff needs to show more trust and belief in Winston's ability, even if it costs them occasionally. There is no doubt that his teammates believe in Winston to help the team get by without Carr.
“Jameis has been in this offense before. We trust Jameis… He knows what he’s doing. He’s a great leader, great quarterback. There’s no falloff. That’s the biggest thing. Everybody trusts Jameis.” — Saints TE Juwan Johnson
If Johnson is correct, there shouldn't be an issue with scheme. They believe that Winston can orchestrate the offense effectively, but the play-calling did not prove that in the second half last week against GB. It looked different from when Carr was in the ballgame.
No matter what – New Orleans cannot afford to drop to 2-2, while giving their NFC South rival Bucs an upper hand this weekend. If Winston has to start, the Saints need to give him more opportunities to succeed with the talented pass-catchers they have on offense.
