The Kansas City Chiefs are adding to their collection of wide receivers, this time making a new addition to the practice squad.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, former Detroit Lions WR Chase Cota is signing to the team's practice squad following a successful workout. An undrafted free agent, Cota originally signed with the Lions following the 2023 NFL draft. He notched 103 receptions for 1,380 yards and nine touchdowns in 53 games during his college career at both UCLA and Oregon. He was with Detroit through the preseason and training camp, but he did not make their 53-man roster and was waived with an injury designation in August.
The 6-foot-3 and 196-pound receiver was a standout during the preseason, recording nine receptions on 18 targets for 111 yards and one touchdown grab.
The Chiefs had a full practice squad, which means a corresponding move will be necessary. We don't yet know for certain, but we can expect this means that the team plans to sign a player from their practice squad to the 53-man roster. They still have an open space on the roster after placing WR Richie James on injured reserve on Saturday.
My bet is that the team will sign WR Montrell Washington to the 53-man roster. The former Denver Broncos return specialist made his debut after a practice squad elevation in Week 3. His showing was perhaps the most promising the team had seen at kick and punt returner in some time.
As for Cota, he's good developmental depth at a position that the Chiefs always seem to be looking for help. He has an NFL pedigree, which never hurts. His father, Chad Cota, played in the NFL for seven seasons after being a seventh-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in 1995.
