Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer knows he has to make a move, and soon.

The team is flailing. And the offense, under an offensive head coach in Frank Reich, has looked iffy at best and awful at worst. So, it is no surprise that the Panthers are involved in the NFL trade market.

Over the weekend, NFL insider Ian Rapoport explained that the Panthers were looking for a starter. Now, fellow league insider Jordan Schultz has reported that the Panthers are in daily pursuit for a new "top-tier" wide receiver.

“The Panthers, according to sources, are in the market, not only for a receiver, but a top-tier one,” Schultz said. “What this comes down to is two-fold: No. 1, they know they don’t have enough weapons for Bryce Young, No. 2, they believe so much in Bryce Young the Panthers do—GM Scott Fitterer, head coach Frank Reich—that they want to go all-in.

“So the Panthers, at 0-4, have actually been competitive—had a couple of games they probably could’ve won, should’ve won—are now looking for a No. 1 receiver. I’m told that Scott Fitterer, the GM, is literally on the phone every single day. This is his top priority right now, to go out and get a No. 1 receiver for Bryce Young.”

Of course, the Panthers coaching staff and general manager are going to double down on their belief in Young. That comes as no surprise to anyone. Where confusion sets in is: What can the Panthers realistically trade to get a top-tier wide receiver?

Also adding salt to the wound is that the Panthers traded away their No. 1 receiver DJ Moore to draft Young. Now they are attempting to circle back and add a receiver after nearly everyone said it made no sense to go all-in on Young if he was going to have zero weapons.

The Panthers find themselves back at square one. Young hasn't been very good. In Andy Dalton's one start, he has nearly gotten more out of the offense than Young has in three.

Yes, Young may be a rookie, but players like Anthony Richardson and CJ Stroud have continued to prove more dynamic than Young five weeks into the regular season.

Even if Fitterer is able to land an elite wide receiver, it won't make much difference to the current state of the Panthers, a team bogged down by poor play calling and a lack of protection on the offensive line.
