Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen is the latest coach in the NFL to come to the defense of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s passing ability.

Before his breakout campaign in the 2019 season, there was plenty of outside talk centering over whether Jackson would be better off making a positional change to running back. He silenced such doubters with his NFL MVP-winning season, but every now and then, there are still questions on whether the two-time Pro Bowler can win games relying solely on his passing ability.

For Steichen, he believes that Jackson is overlooked as a passer.

"Yeah, I think so," Steichen said during a press conference on Wednesday. "I think he’s a really good passer. You look back over the last couple years — I don’t have the numbers but he’s thrown for a ton of yards in some games.

"I know people look at him sometimes as a runner, but this guy, he can do it all."

Steichen has been watching film on Jackson in preparation for the Colts' Week 3 road matchup against the Ravens. He is well aware that his defense will need to be on its heels whenever Jackson decides to run with the football.

"He can throw it really well and he can create those big plays with his feet,” Steichen said. “I think as a runner, he’s just so shifty and elusive. When he’s out there in the open field, he’s got that quick twitch about him to make guys miss. … So, we’ve just got to be on the details defensively, know where he’s at, make sure we’re prepared from a game plan standpoint to be ready to go."

Overall, Jackson has thrown for four touchdown passes and notched a 125.5 passer rating in two career starts against Indianapolis.
