If there was one thing to blame the loss on last week for the Houston Texans against the Baltimore Ravens, it certainly wasn't the defense, which played one of their better games in the last few years.
The defense made things more than complicated for the Ravens and Lamar Jackson. Had the offense picked up their side of the bargain, there would have been a good chance we saw the Texans open up in 2023 with a win.
The Texans were dealing with a lot of things not on their side, for sure, and the biggest one was injuries to the offensive line. However, there is one other thing that DeMeco Ryans, the rookie head coach, thinks his team can do better.
"I think we can run it more," said Ryans during his press conference. "We'll try to run it more. I think we can be more effective at it, we can block it better, and you'll see that."
Dameon Pierce, the Texans' star running back last season, wasn't as involved as you'd like him to be. Pierce rushed just 11 times for 31 yards. The run game, as a whole, averaged 3.1 yards per carry, which just won't get it done against a defense like the one the Ravens have.
"Last week, we were not as crisp, getting down in the play clock and snapping the ball with two seconds," Pierce said. "We got a few penalties for not being set or illegal procedure. We just need to make things a lot simpler for C.J. this week and an offense as a whole."
After a week under their belt with the new offensive line, maybe the Texans can establish the run game a bit better on Sunday. We should see them run it more.
