Aaron Rodgers is not walking through that door any time soon despite what he says. The idea of a playoff return is concerning considering in order for that to happen the Jets need to actually make the playoffs.
For the Jets to make the playoffs they need to be able to score more than 10 points in a game. Granted, it was a top-level defense, but the Jets were never really even threatening to score and only managed a touchdown because of one big play by Garrett Wilson.
In order to have sustained success they need to be able to run the ball. They didn’t against Dallas with only 16 total attempts, five of which came from Zach Wilson scrambles or scrums, and one was safety Ashtyn Davis on a fake punt.
It’s obvious now that the Jets offensive plan is to hide Zach Wilson at all costs. While I think you can only hide him for so long, they gave up far too easily on the run.
Breece Hall, who was one of the only bright spots in the win over the Buffalo Bills, only got four carries in the game. He was not happy about it either and was quick to point it out after the game.
“I only had four touches, that’s why we struggled,” Hall said. “We got down early and kind of abandoned the run.” Hall would later double down on his criticism, posting four emojis on his social media to indicate only four carries.
The game wasn’t out of hand until the fourth quarter. There was no reason to completely abandon the run. If you are going to win games on the backs of your defense, you need to give them a chance. You need to sustain a drive for longer than four plays and give your defense a chance to catch their breath.
After the game, Robert Saleh spoke about the Cowboys’ ability to stop the run: “I mean they were single high, stacking the box. Daring us to throw the football. And like I said, we had a couple of 3rd-and-1 opportunities. We just couldn't convert it to be able to get ourselves a chance to run."
Perhaps part of the problem for the Jets isn’t just running the ball but choosing where and how to run the ball.
The Jets ran to the right side twice in this game behind Alijah Vera-Tucker and Mekhi Becton. Both times they gained six yards. All other carries for running backs gained 18 yards on eight carries which is a 2.3 yard per carry. Abysmal.
AVT is easily the Jets best offensive lineman and for all the issues I believe that Mekhi Becton has as a football player, the one criticism you will never hear is that he is weak in the run game. He is a mauler. Use it.
The Jets have a lot of issues right now that a great QB can cover up. Zach Wilson is not a great QB, so it will be up to the coaches to cover their issues up. Nathaniel Hackett reportedly worked extra this week to devise a gameplan that worked for Zach Wilson. I might not be an offensive coordinator, but I think the plan failed.
The Jets might have a scheme issue and they also might have a personnel issue. Duane Brown does not look ready to be in games right now. You hope that it is just because he missed all of camp and preseason, but it is hard to watch him right now. Tomlinson and McGovern did not have very good games.
Robert Saleh said after the game that he won’t let this loss snowball. But after one game you have players questioning the game plan. Things need to get better quickly, or this season might be over after only four offensive plays.
Biggest takeaways from the Jets loss to the Cowboys
Things better change quickly if the Jets want a shot at the playoffs.
