An NFL insider made a statement about Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow this week that feels a bit ominous.
Burrow has been battling a calf injury that he suffered just after the start of training camp in late July. The injury caused Burrow to miss most of training camp, which has led to Cincinnati's offense not looking crisp early this season.
The Bengals are off to an 0-2 start and to make matters worse, Burrow "tweaked" his calf injury in Cincinnati's Week 2 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
It wouldn't be a surprise if Burrow plays on Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams, but at this point, it's unclear how the injury will impact him.
Through the first two games of the season, Burrow has rushed for just four yards.
In Cincinnati's first two games last season, which were also both losses, Burrow rushed for 73 yards. The calf injury is obviously limiting Burrow's mobility which is in turn limiting the Bengals' offensive production.
And the unfortunate thing for Cincinnati is that there's no guarantee that Burrow will be healthy anytime soon.
In fact, that's exactly the point that ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano made this week.
"At this point it does seem we can assume he (Burrow) isn't fully healthy, which could mean trouble for the Bengals all year," wrote Graziano on Wednesday.
The "all year" part is not what you want to hear if you're a Cincinnati fan or just an NFL fan in general.
If Burrow isn't 100 percent, or at least close enough to 100 percent that he can get on the move without limitations, it's going to be tough for the Bengals' offense to operate at a championship level.
That's why Burrow would've been smart (like Ja'Marr Chase suggested) to sit out the first two games of the season.
Sure, he's a competitor and it's hard to keep him off the field. But the Bengals would be feeling a lot better right now if they were 0-2 with a healthy Burrow returning to the field instead of 0-2 with a hobbled Burrow lined up to face the Rams on Monday Night Football.
The Bengals might be wise to keep Burrow out in Week 3. The possibility of starting 0-3 is tough to swallow, but it would be better to be 0-3 with a healthier Burrow than 0-3 with a Burrow that's even more banged up.
It’s time for everyone to apologize to Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase
