Christian Gonzalez has certainly made an impression despite only playing in the league for such a short time.
The rookie cornerback was named the Defensive Rookie of the Month for September, the New England Patriots announced on Thursday.
Gonzalez was drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and the star out of Oregon has not disappointed, making big plays for the team in each and every game.
In his NFL debut Gonzalez sacked Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Jalen Hurts and followed it up by interception Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa in Week 2.
Gonzalez has not shied away from the tough challenges, going up against the top receivers on the Patriots in practice and then having to cover the best ones around the league during games.
“But it’s just a credit to how competitive he is in practice, to go against guys like DeVante Parker, KB, JuJu, Pop, (Kayson Boutte), all those guys that we have over there," fellow cornerback Myles Bryant told A to Z Sports. "Just a credit to how competitive he is against those guys. It shows on the field during game days.”
And he has been asked to step up in recent weeks due to the injuries that have plagued a few of the Patriots cornerbacks including Jack Jones and Marcus Jones. With that, it is Bryant and Gonzalez who have been tasked with filling in and they have not missed a step.
The defense has been a shining spot for the Patriots this season, and Gonzalez has a lot to do with that. And he will certainly be fun to watch as the year continues.
Let's see what else he has in store.
