Some folks have a hard time letting go of things. For the Dolphins, it appears that thing could be Jonathan Taylor.
The Dolphins were very interested in Taylor in late August but couldn't swing a deal for him when the teams were trimming their rosters down to 53. When the parameters of the discussions were revealed, it wasn't surprising why things fizzled out. According to the Miami Herald, the Colts' trade demand included WR Jaylen Waddle "and more".
Per A to Z Sports' Destin Adams, that interest by the Dolphins – among several other teams – has carried over into the regular season despite the Colts' alleged wild trade compensation requests. Taylor will come off injured reserve (IR) on Monday. And according to Adams, the Colts are willing to hang onto him until a team is ready to negotiate on Indianapolis' terms.
The interest from Miami is a bit baffling, as the team currently has one of the most productive running backs in the NFL in Raheem Mostert. The speedster is sixth in the NFL in rushing yards (241) and yards per carry (5.9) and first in touchdowns while earning an elite Pro Football Focus grade of 89.4. He's been simply awesome.
De'Von Achane has also been excellent, earning AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors last week where he compiled 233 yards from scrimmage and 4 total touchdowns in last week's record-shattering 70-20 thrashing of the Denver Broncos. Achane missed part of the preseason while recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered against the Houston Texans. Now healthy, he's showing now that the faith the team put in him by drafting him in the third round was warranted.
Miami should also get back Jeff Wilson, Jr. sooner than later. The veteran RB has been dealing with midsection and finger issues and was placed on IR to start the season, which makes him eligible to return after the Dolphins game against Buffalo this Sunday.
Miami has dynamic and experienced options at the running back spot who are producing at a very high level right now. They would also, in any sane world, refuse to part with Waddle or give up any similar compensation to add a player like Taylor to this particular roster. That's also to say nothing of the need to spend big money on signing him to a new contract.
So the Dolphins might keep dreaming of Taylor bursting through holes in opposing defenses, but they would be foolish to follow through on those desires right now.
