The Green Bay Packers (6-6) are officially in business after Sunday night's monstrous win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The boys in green and gold are currently the NFC's seventh playoff seed, thanks to an earlier win over the Los Angeles Rams (6-6). It seemed like this team was dead in the water just a little more than a month-and-a-half ago, but now, they're looking like one of the better teams in the conference.
The Week 13 win over the Chiefs was filled with all kinds of clutch plays that helped the Packers score 27 points despite having just seven total possessions on the night – three of which came in the fourth quarter, alone.
But Keisean Nixon's fourth quarter interception is what stands out the most. The All-Pro returner/nickel corner made a play when his team needed it and the best part is he knew exactly what was coming.
"He checked [the play]," Nixon told reporters after the game. "We watched a mannerism earlier in the week and he tapped his knee and they put two off the ball. I'm like, 'Oh, I've seen it before.' I knew he was gonna run it [the play] and he ran it…
"… I don't wanna say [we] played lights out, but he felt us for sure."
Nixon's interception handed the Packers a season-defining victory
The Packers had just kicked a field goal to go up five points on the Chiefs, but Mahomes and co. had driven the length of the field for a touchdown on the prior drive, so it was starting to look this game would end via a traditional Mahomes comeback.
It really started to look that way after Packers cornerback, Corey Ballentine, was hit with a defensive pass interference call that moved the Chiefs into Green Bay territory. With over five minutes left on the clock, a full slate of timeouts, and just a five-point deficit, anything was possible.
But, Nixon said, 'Nope.' and proceeded to pulled off what was an incredible interception in a crucial moment. It also led to the Packers' second field goal of the game, which gave them a safer, eight-point lead that turned out to be the final difference.
Nixon's rise with the Packers is certainly a story worth telling
Remember, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was literally apologizing for not putting Nixon on the field sooner in 2022. Now, the dude is out here making game-winning interceptions and locking down slot receivers.
It's an incredible story and Nixon wouldn't be in town if it weren't for the hiring of Rich Bisaccia. In a way, the Packers have the Las Vegas Raiders to thank for that one. Either way, it's obvious Joe Barry and co. are thrilled to have him on the roster.
"What a big-time play," LaFleur said after the game. "We talked at halftime [and] we told the guys that it was going to come down to the ball – that whoever gets a takeaway is going to win this game. It happened to be us and it happened to be a great play by Keisean."
If the Packers continue their march, then the 2023 season will certainly be a story worth telling over coming years, as well.
