Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts briefly left Sunday's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers to be evaluated for a concussion.
In the meantime, the Eagles turned to Marcus Mariota to start the fourth quarter.
Mariota threw just four passes before Hurts returned. At this point, the Eagles were down 35-13 with less than 10 minutes to go in game regulation.
“Obviously it was an assessment in that moment," Hurts said on returning from a potential head injury. "Everybody was doing their jobs and doing their roles. I was able to come back when everybody felt that I was ready to.”
Hurts led a scoring drive, finding DeVonta Smith for a 2-yard touchdown pass.
The Eagles then attempted a two-point conversion which failed.
Now the score was 35-19 with 5:33 remaining on the clock.
There was no way that the Eagles were going to magically come back and win this, but still, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni kept his starters in.
“I thought he was fine when he came back in and was running the show and operating fine,” Sirianni said post-game. “Went down, drove, got a touchdown. Then we just stalled out on the next drive. They’re playing soft or giving us the stuff underneath, but I thought he operated fine when he came back in."
Hurts, who completed 26 of 45 pass attempts for 298 yards and a single touchdown, insisted on coming back in to finish the game.
“It wasn’t about showing anybody anything. It was more so that the game was not over," Hurts said. "We were just trying to keep fighting.”
The Eagles lost 42-19 to the Niners.
At 10-2 heading into Week 14, the Eagles will prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys, and a healthy Hurts is not only desired, but much-needed.
For now, there's no concern from Sirianni or Hurts about a possible injury.
"Obviously, we’ll see how he’s feeling and everything," Sirianni said.
