The Philadelphia Eagles enter training camp with legitimate questions at edge rusher, and one national writer thinks the answer is a 37-year-old future Hall of Famer. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton recently published an article listing eight roster moves that need to happen before training camp, and one of the suggestions was for the Eagles to sign veteran pass rusher Von Miller.

Before anybody gets too excited, let’s pump the brakes. This isn’t a report. There’s no rumored interest from the front office. It’s a hypothetical, and honestly, I don’t think it’s the right one.

Von Miller’s resume speaks for itself, but the fit doesn’t

Look, I’m not going to sit here and disrespect Von Miller. The man is 13th all-time on the NFL sacks list. He’s a two-time Super Bowl champion, an eight-time Pro Bowler, and a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 2025, he led Washington with nine sacks while only being on the field for 37% of the defensive snaps. On the surface, that number jumps off the page. But context matters.

The Commanders were a disaster last season, per usual. A lot of those sacks likely came in garbage time, in games where the outcome was already decided and opposing offenses weren’t exactly protecting the football with playoff urgency. Miller also didn’t rank particularly well among edge rushers in the advanced metrics. So when people throw out the nine-sack number without that context, I think they’re leaving out some pretty important information.

What Von Miller can provide right now is not enough to justify a roster spot if he’s going to eat meaningful snaps. If he wants to come to Philadelphia on a veteran minimum deal, play five snaps a game, and mentor Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt, sure, I’m cool with that. But we already have a guy who can fill that role, and he’s a Philly legend.

Brandon Graham makes more sense

If the Eagles want a veteran presence on the edge, I’d rather bring back Brandon Graham. BG is a Super Bowl champion who did it here, in this building, with this fan base. He knows the culture, he knows the players. He’s beloved in the locker room. Why would you bring in a 37-year-old outsider when you have a homegrown legend who can provide the same mentorship and leadership, if not more?

The Eagles don’t need Von Miller to teach Nolan Smith how to rush the passer. They need someone who can connect with these young guys on a personal level, someone who bleeds green. That’s Brandon Graham.

The real edge rusher conversation in Philadelphia

The bigger picture here is what the Eagles actually have at the position. Philadelphia acquired edge rusher Jonathan Greenard from the Minnesota Vikings during the draft, and he’s going to be the guy on one side. The question is who lines up opposite him.

Jalyx Hunt showed real signs of promise last season, and honestly, it wasn’t just 2025. Hunt was phenomenal at the end of 2024 as a rookie during that Super Bowl run. Even though he was essentially redshirted for much of his first year, he still made an impact when his number was called. The potential is sky-high for Hunt, and this is the season where he needs to put it all together on the field.

Then there’s Nolan Smith, who remains one of the more fascinating decisions looming over this roster. Smith has shown flashes, but Howie Roseman is going to have to make a tough call on whether to pay him after the season with so many other young defensive studs looking for extensions. That situation alone makes this training camp critical for Smith’s future in Philadelphia.

You don’t want to bring in a guy like Von Miller and take snaps away from Greenard, Hunt, or Smith. Those are the players the Eagles need to develop and evaluate. Signing a 37-year-old pass rusher who’s on the back end of his career doesn’t move the needle for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

The real move is patience

Every year around this time, it feels like Howie Roseman pulls something out of left field. Last year it was JaKorian Bennett. So maybe there’s a move coming that none of us see right now. But I don’t think it’s Von Miller. If the Eagles want to add a veteran edge rusher, find someone younger who can actually produce in meaningful snaps. Philadelphia’s defensive front is loaded with talent, and the last thing this team needs is to clog up reps for guys who need to prove themselves this summer. The edge rotation will sort itself out, and I trust Howie to make the right call if reinforcements are truly needed.
