The NFL career of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning can either skyrocket towards stardom, or stay down on Earth in the next several weeks.
If the former happens, which would be phenomenal for the 5-5 Bengals, then don't worry about coming up with a nickname for the guy replacing an injured Joe Burrow. He's already been given one back when he first joined the Bengals two years ago:
"Jakey Spinrate"
Browning told reporters during his first press conference as the Bengals' starting QB that the nickname came about right after he was cut from the Minnesota Vikings and practiced with the Bengals for the first time. From the very beginning, Browning has always felt support from the guy he's now replacing to end the year.
"He's never had anything but confidence in me from kind of the day I stepped in here and threw it a little bit with them," Browning said of Burrow. "I think he called me Jakey Spinrate or I think him or Brandon Allen called me that, so I was like all right, it always feels a little good."
Browning later clarified that Allen, the team's former QB2, came up with the nickname. Allen was entering his first year in that role behind Burrow when Browning was signed onto the practice squad in 2021. Allen left Cincinnati this past offseason, clearing the way for Browning to step into his shoes.
Allen's departure may have also led to the disappearance of the moniker given to Browning.
"I guess I don't know," Browning answered when asked if the nickname has been kept alive. "Not as much so. I think that was that was a Brandon Allen nickname. I think so. Ii kind of died when he left.
He may've just revived it. We'll see if it sticks.

Browning now has the reins to the offense, for better or worse.
