The Green Bay Packers started the season 3-6, and now have had three consecutive wins against tough opponents to put themselves in position to make the playoffs. The good moment, however, hasn't been enough to catch up in the Pro Bowl voting.
On Wednesday, the NFL released the first installment of the voting, with the ten highest-voted players per position. And the Packers are one of the least popular teams. Just two players made the top 10, and none is at the top of their positions.
RS Keisean Nixon
The first one, and the Packers player with the highest chance of making the Pro Bowl, is return specialist Keisean Nixon. Statistically, he's been by far the best returner this season, but still Rashid Shaheed, from the New Orleans Saints, appeared ahead of him in the first installment of the voting. Nixon is second, ahead of Braxton Berrios (Miami Dolphins), KaVontae Turpin (Dallas Cowboys), and Ray-Ray McCloud (San Francisco 49ers)
OLB Rashan Gary
This is a tough position, because there are so many talented guys. And it becomes easier than it might because several elite edge rushers are listed as defensive ends. But Rashan Gary is eighth among outside linebackers, behind TJ Watt (Pittsburgh Steelers), Micah Parsons (Dallas Cowboys), Josh Allen (Jacksonville Jaguars), Danielle Hunter (Minnesota Vikings), Kayvon Thibodeaux (New York Giants), Haason Reddick (Philadelphia Eagles), and Bradley Chubb (Miami Dolphins). We can certainly argue that Gary should be in the top 5 here, but it will be a tough road for him to make it to the Pro Bowl.
Who can get in?
The Packers are still a young team trying to find long-term pieces, and their wins are based on a collective effort. However, there are pieces who could deserve consideration — and that might grow in people's minds until the end of the season.
QB Jordan Love
It's hard to say that Love is a top 10 quarterback right now, but the 10th in voting is Washington Commanders' Sam Howell. Well, Love is clearly above him as a quarterback. The top 3 QBs in the NFC are Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts, and Brock Purdy. Beyond that, it's an open competition.
RT Zach Tom
Tom is not a very recognizable name to the national audience, but he's played at a really high level. The top 10 has players like Terron Armstead (who's great, but missed a lot of games because of injury) and Dion Dawkins, so Tom deserves consideration.
G Elgton Jenkins
This season, Jenkins has re-established himself as a top guard. The top 10 of the first installment has players like Aaron Banks (San Francisco 49ers) and Robert Hunt (Miami Dolphins), so Jenkin could have a bigger chance if the Packers keep winning.
LB Quay Walker
Walker has missed some games, which doesn't help, but the inside linebacker group has players like Bobby Okereke, Patrick Queen, and Bobby Wagner (this one is recognizable, but he's not the same player anymore). If Walker can stay on the field and keep his level of production, he should be at least a consideration to the top 10.
The voting process is still open at NFL.com.
