The Tennessee Vols, for the second straight offseason, are at risk of losing a key assistant coach to a head coaching job.

A year ago, the Vols lost offensive coordinator Alex Golesh, who took over as the head coach at USF.

This year, it could be running backs coach Jerry Mack that's on the move.

On Monday, Football Scoop reported that Mack is a name to watch for Middle Tennessee State's coaching search.

MTSU parted ways with longtime coach Rick Stockstill on Monday.

From Football Scoop: With a recruiting radius that stretches comfortably from Nashville to Birmingham to Atlanta, the MTSU job is expected to draw significant interest. A couple of early names sources indicated to FootballScoop to watch are Tennessee running backs coach Jerry Mack and FIU deputy head coach Josh Eargle.

Mack, who has served as the Vols' running backs coach for the last three seasons, is from Memphis. The 43-year-old Tennessee assistant has previous head coach experience as he served as North Carolina Central's head coach from 2014 to 2017.

UT's running backs were one of the few bright spots for the Vols' offense in 2023. Under Mack's guidance, Jaylen Wright became Tennessee's first 1,000 yard rusher since Jalen Hurd in 2015.
