Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb’s historic streak of 10-catch, 150-yard games might’ve come to an end in Week 11, but he remains one of the league’s best playmakers.
The same confident player who suggested he’d remind media and fans about how good he is understands that Thursday night’s showdown will be a tough challenge for him and the Cowboys’ wide receivers, however.
“First of all they’re tall and they’re fast,” Lamb told reporters on Monday. “That’s like game breaking. Having that type of length on the outside it’s easy for them and you really got to work your technique against those guys.”
It’s true. Tariq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon are both long and tall and have shined in coverage this season. While the Seahawks haven’t quite hammered down their pass defense (they rank 14th in pass EPA/play), these two can make a receiver’s day very complicated if they don’t bring their A-game.
Witherspoon is graded as the fourth best cornerback per PFF and Woolen ranks inside the Top 50. For Lamb specifically, most of his snaps will likely come against Witherspoon, the Seahawks’ top cornerback, whether it's inside or outside. While most of his snaps have come out wide, Witherspoon has moved around this season and played mostly in the slot against San Francisco. He could travel and face No. 88 all around the field.
But that doesn’t mean Lamb won’t get reps on the boundary.
Part of what’s made Lamb so effective as of late is that he is constantly moved around. Many of his best plays this year have come as the isolated receiver, oftentimes in in 3×1 formations, where it’s more difficult for opponents to double him with brackets coverage.
In other words, the Cowboys’ toolbox to get CeeDee one-on-one looks includes moving him to the outside.
Even still, expect the Seahawks to zero in on No. 88. In return, they can bet on the Cowboys wide receiver room taking it personally.
“Obviously, I feel like that's much respect to me, and also I feel like it's disrespectful to the (other wide receivers) because you're doubling me and then leaving everybody else one-on-one,” Lamb added.
Buckle up, it’s going to be a fun battle between these two groups on primetime TV.
