The bad news just keeps on coming for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Following the team's 24-7 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Chargers coach Brandon Staley announced that quarterback Justin Herbert has a fractured right index finger. This is the second time Herbert has sustained a finger injury — earlier this season, Herbert fractured the middle finger on his left (non-throwing) hand.
There's no telling how long Herbert will be out, but it could very well be for the remainder of the 2023 season.
Herbert left Sunday's game late in the second quarter and never returned. He finished the day with just 96 yards and an interception.
Backup QB Easton Stick entered the game in place of Herbert and struggled all day. Stick finished with 179 yards passing, was sacked twice and fumbled the ball twice. Needless to say, it was a rough outing for L.A.
With the Chargers dropping to 5-8, the next course of action may be to stash their star QB for the rest of the season. An injury to Herbert's throwing hand means he'll miss some games, so even if he tried to return later, the team's playoff hopes will probably already be dashed (if they aren't already).
Fans always hate to hear this, but it could be time for the team to start looking forward to the NFL Draft.
