This has been a rough season for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney.
And things didn't get any better for him on Sunday after a perfect pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes slipped through Toney's fingers. Instead, Jahlani Tavai was able to grab it out of the air, resulting in a crucial turnover.
Despite the Chiefs being able to pull out the win, this is just the latest mistake he has made that has cost the Chiefs during the game. And one New England Patriots legend had a lot to say about the receiver on Wednesday.
Appearing on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, Rob Gronkowski provided his honest opinion.
"Kadarius Toney is an athletic freak. The guy can run routes like no other. He can return punts," Gronkowski explained. "But when you're making costly mistakes like that, in and out. I mean from beginning of the season to the middle of the season, throughout your whole career. It's kind of like you just don't love the game of football."
"You're just out there because you're so athletic, that you are born with that type of athleticism. But you are not out there to be the best teammate you can be or be the best football player that you can be," he added. "Because those mistakes that he's making should have been corrected after the first time. If you love the game of football, you go back to the locker room, you take accountability of it all, you go hit the practice field."
Toney has come under fire for many of his mistakes this season, with the most controversial occurring during Week 14. The receiver was called for an offsides penalty erasing what could have been a game-winning touchdown. And the Chiefs went on to lose to the Buffalo Bills.
So with everything that has happened, Gronkowski was asked if he believes Reid should bench Toney.
"I truly thing so," he said. "It's a possibility that he should be benched. I mean you can't trust him with catching the ball and it not flying somewhere."
The Chiefs win over the Patriots snapped a two-game losing streak.
Currently in the playoff hunt, but with a spot not officially clinched, the Chiefs need to play their best football in hopes of getting back to the Super Bowl.
And according to Gronkowski, Toney should not be a part of that.
"When you keep making mistakes like that, you must not be that much into the game you must not love the game."
