Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is currently listed as the betting favorite to win the 2023 NFL MVP award, but there are other players who are still in the race for the honor.
Among them, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is tied with Miami Dolphins passer Tua Tagovailoa for the third-best odds (+800) to take home the league’s most prestigious individual honor. Allen has logged 4,191 total yards and 40 total touchdowns through 15 games played this year.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer is not among those who would vote for Allen to win this season's NFL MVP award but rather Jackson for one simple reason.
"I think he [Josh Allen] deserves consideration," Breer wrote in his weekly mailbag column. "I think as much as any team does with its quarterback, the Buffalo Bills ask Josh Allen to put the cape on when trouble strikes. And Allen, more often than not, delivers. … The turnovers, of course, have hurt his case. His 15 interceptions rank second in the NFL (he has two fewer than Sam Howell and one more than Patrick Mahomes). He’s also lost three fumbles.
"But again, I do think that, over time, the turnovers have been a result of situations and circumstances where the team was asking a lot of him. While that doesn’t excuse all of them, it does bring context to some of them. And I think it’s got to be part of the equation when you’re assessing his (really strong) case for the award. Right now, I’d vote for Lamar Jackson. Allen might be second for me."
As Breer touched on, Allen has turned the football over a total of 18 times this season, with 15 interceptions and three fumbles lost. On the other hand, Jackson has tallied 13 turnovers, with seven interceptions and six fumbles lost. He has given the football away just two times in the Ravens’ last five games.
Jackson is set to square off with the Dolphins in Week 17, while Allen will face the New England Patriots.
Ravens’ Patrick Queen sends bold message to rest of the NFL after convincing win vs. 49ers
The Baltimore Ravens had plenty of motivation heading into their road matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. For one, the 49ers were listed as the betting favorite to secure a win over the Ravens. It was just the second time all season that the Ravens entered a game as an underdog, with the previous time […]
