The Tennessee Vols started the new year off with some unfortunate news.

As the ball dropped on Sunday night, signaling the beginning of 2024, the Vols received word that five-star defensive lineman Dominick McKinley flipped his commitment from Texas A&M to LSU.

McKinley, who had been committed to Texas A&M since September, was the Vols' biggest remaining target in the 2024 recruiting class. And he was scheduled to take an official visit to Tennessee in late January.

McKinley, 6-foot-5/280 lbs from Lafayette, LA, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 6 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana.

“The opportunity I could get from them being an All-American and being an instate kid," said McKinley to On3 on why he committed to LSU.

McKinley can't sign with LSU until February, during the traditional signing period, but it seems unlikely that he'll flip his commitment again (it's also unclear if he still plans to visit Tennessee later this month).

It was always going to be tough to land McKinley over LSU, but you can't fault the Vols' coaching staff for taking a swing at the potentially dominant defensive lineman.
