With the playoffs approaching in both college football and the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs fans will soon turn their attention to the 2024 NFL draft.
After underperforming in 2023, Chiefs fans expect the team to heavily invest in the wide receiver position, both through free agency and the draft. Thankfully, this year boasts one of the deepest wide receiver draft classes in some time. It wouldn't be shocking to see over a dozen receivers selected in the top 75 picks this season.
The College Football Playoff takes place on Monday, Jan. 1, and there are a whole lot of wide receiver prospects that Chiefs fans should be paying attention to.
Rose Bowl: Alabama vs. Michigan
Alabama WR Jermaine Burton
A 6-foot and 200-pound senior for the Crimson Tide, Burton brings experience and consistency to the pro level. He's made improvements to his game every season at Alabama, culminating in 35 catches for 777 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during 2023. Those are the highest yardage, yard per reception, and touchdown marks of a single season in his career. His 22 yards per reception was also the second-highest mark in the FBS this year.
Michigan WR Roman Wilson
Listed at 6-foot and 180 pounds, Wilson is the speedster in the Michigan offense. He's the type who gets plenty of designed touches and yards-after-catch opportunities. He was exceptional against single coverage in 2023 and isn't afraid to compete with bigger DBs. He's coming off a career campaign as a Senior with the Wolverines with career highs in catches (41), yards (662) and touchdowns (11).
Michigan WR Cornelius Johnson
This 6-foot-3 and 211-pound wide receiver is remembered for his masterclass performance against Ohio State in 2022, where he recorded four receptions for 160 yards and two touchdowns. He's a big, physical wideout who can stack DBs and threaten vertically, but also challenge on contested throws at the catch point. He's set a career-high in catches this season (43), but he only has a single touchdown on the season.
Sugar Bowl: Washington vs. Texas
Washington WR Rome Odunze
Odunze is trending to be a top-15 selection in the 2024 NFL draft, so don't expect Kansas City to get him without trading up. His performance helped pave the way for his quarterback to be a Heisman finalist. Odunze finished the 2023 season with 81 receptions for 1,428 yards and 13 touchdowns (third-most yards and tied for third-most touchdowns in the FBS this season). He's a freakish size/speed threat at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, reportedly running a 4.3 40-yard dash heading into the season.
Washington WR Jalen McMillan
A bit of a sleeper after missing some time in 2023 with an injury, McMillan is one of the most explosive receivers in this draft class. On any given play, the 6-foot-1 and 180-pound wideout is a threat to take the football the distance, whether that means getting open on a play 15 or more yards downfield or catching a pass short of the sticks and creating after the catch. He had over 1,000 yards in 2022, and in only nine games in 2023, he has 34 catches for 468 yards and three touchdowns.
Texas WR Xavier Worthy
If there's something that separates Worthy from the receivers in this draft class it's his unrivaled acceleration. He runs past practically everyone when the ball is in his hands. The 6-foot-1 and 172-pound receiver is sudden and nuanced in his route-running, which makes him a threat in any area of the field. The junior finished 2023 with 73 receptions for 969 yards and five touchdowns. He led the Big 12 in yards and had the third-most receptions in the conference.
Texas WR Adonai Mitchell
We've already profiled Adonai "AD" Mitchell this season. You can read all about him here.
