It makes sense that the Cleveland Browns could potentially sign a former Pro Bowl player before a playoff run.
Dalvin Cook and the New York Jets decided to part ways and Cook is now likely set to sign with a playoff team. The Browns make sense for a couple of reasons and Kevin Stefanski is one.
Stefanski was an assistant with the Minnesota Vikings before coming to the Browns, so he was able to see Cook up close from 2017-2019. Cook took off after Stefanski left and had four straight 1,000-yard seasons from 2019-2022.
Cleveland’s run game has been functional since losing Nick Chubb back in Week 2. But the committee of Jerome Ford, Kareem Hunt, and Pierre Strong would benefit by adding Cook. Right now, Ford and Hunt man most of the runs, and it’ll stay that way. They sprinkle Strong in sparingly but there hasn’t been much there.
Not only is Stefanski familiar with Cook, but Cook strives in a run-blocking system the Browns operate with. He’s only running at 3.2 yards per carry, which would be better than Hunt’s 3 yards per carry. Cook had big plans when signing with the Jets but Aaron Rodgers was hurt and Breece Hall deserved the majority of the workload.
We’ll see if Cook clears waivers, one would think that he will. Then he will have the ability to sign with any team. That team just may be the Browns.
Browns have a costly decision to make with Joe Flacco this week
We’ll see how they decide to handle it.
