The 49ers have spent the vast majority of the 2023 NFL season at the top of the league in both the standings and a plethora of statistical categories.

It should be no surprise then, that they lead the league in the number of Pro Bowl players for the 2023 season.

San Francisco had nine players named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster on Wednesday, with eight selected as starters.

Purdy ends long wait

The headliner is of course starting quarterback Brock Purdy, named to his first Pro Bowl in his first full season as the starter after a spectacular campaign. Purdy broke the 49ers' single-season record for passing yards with 4,280, while he leads the NFL in touchdown percentage, passer rating, QBR and every yards per attempt metric going into Week 18.

Purdy is the first 49ers quarterback to be named to the Pro Bowl since Jeff Garcia in 2002. Garcia is the player whose passing yards record Purdy surpassed last Sunday.

Joining Purdy as a first-time Pro Bowler is Charvarius Ward, the 49ers' cornerback who leads the NFL with 23 pass breakups and also has five interceptions in a stellar campaign that may even see him named to the All-Pro team.

Williams in HOF company

On the other end of the spectrum, left tackle Trent Williams' selection is the 11th of his incredible career, joining Hall of Famers Anthony Munoz, Jonathan Ogden and Willie Roaf as only the fourth tackle to reach that number.

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk was selected for the eighth time in his career, while tight end George Kittle received his fifth nod. Nick Bosa's selection makes it four Pro Bowls in five seasons in the NFL for the defensive end, a 2020 season that saw him tear his ACL the only one in which he has missed out.

Offensive Player of the Year favorite Christian McCaffrey was snubbed last year, but there is no such omission this year for the running back, who leads the NFL with 2,023 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns.

Linebacker Fred Warner was unsurprisingly selected for the third time in his career, while defensive tackle Javon Hargrave made it as a backup in his first season with the 49ers after signing a blockbuster free-agent deal in the offseason.

Aiyuk a glaring omission

On top of their nine selections, the 49ers had 12 players named as Pro Bowl alternates.

Leading receiver Brandon Aiyuk is the biggest omission from the initial roster in a year in which he has 1,317 yards and counting.

Aiyuk is second in the NFL in yards per route run (3.01), second in efficiency metric DYAR, which measures total value, and first in DVOA, which measures per-play value. His DVOA (46.8%) is 16 percentage points higher than nearest challenger Nico Collins (30.8%).

Deebo Samuel is also an alternate, along with offensive linemen Jake Brendel, Aaron Banks and Colton McKivitz.

Arik Armstead, Dre Greenlaw, Oren Burks, Chase Young and Deommodore Lenoir are the 49ers' defensive alternates. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky and long snapper Taybor Pepper also received that distinction after missing out on the roster.
